Today I've a recieved an SACD Serenada Schizophrenia by Danny Elfman, and the disc supports standard Audio CD, SACD-Stereo and SACD-Surround.
When I try to play the SACD-Stereo the music comes out as standard 44.1/16 Audio, but when I choose Audio CD, its 88.2/24. Why is this happening? |

| That's odd. Maybe the mastering on the disc index is wrong and the pointers are switched? I don't know enough about SACD directory structure to know if that is possible, but it seems like that is the only thing that would do that if no other discs exhibit the same behavior on your PS3. |

Well I think I've may have run accross the answer. I know that when I choose Audio CD the PS3 is upsampling the audio as it always does.
But I'm thinking the SACD layer maybe above 96Khz and the PS3 will not send such a high sample rate over a optical connection, so its just down sampling to the default 44.1khz.
Could this be possible? |

It is. It's 2,822 kHz. But that's not the answer.
What connection are you using? Optical? |

| The DSD stream is at that frequency, but the converted PCM is not. Sounds like it is that, that the upsampled CD is fine over the optical, but it is converting the DSD to too high a frequency to pass. |

I'd agree with this. For what it's worth, try setting the output signal to 48kHz in the music settings option, and choose bitmap 3, then comapre SACD to CD. Of course, if you are outputting over optical, you will not get an SACD signal out. |

Of course you are correct, but strictly speaking, the SACD signal from the PS3 would be maximum of 176.2Khz (given that the PS3 converts from DSD to PCM before outputting the signal over HDMI). |

The simple answer is NO. Even with PS3 software version 2.0, it changed the PCM stream into a DTS stream, i.e. relatively lossy. Still good, but a high DVD quality version if you will. |

| No, that doesn't seem right. Multichannel DSD (DST) was converted to DTS (disabled as of v2.01), stereo DSD converted to PCM. |

It shouldn't be, because then you might as well play the CD layer.
The optical connection in practice supports 88.2 kHz (even though apparently the spec only goes up to 48 kHz) but I'm not sure about what resolution: whether 24-bit is supported or only 16-bit. |

Sorry to bring this post up agian, but I'm still having this problem. Perhaps I've misinterpreted the answer.
Am I supposed to get 44.1khz playback over optical with SACD-Stereo?
My speaker system supports up to 96khz 24-bit, and can upsample a normal audio to 88.2 khz. |

No idea what's going wrong here. As far as I can think of, the settings applying to this are not for either CD or SACD only, they're for both.
Perhaps there really is some (self-imposed) restriction not to upsample SACD audio output via optical beyond 44.1kHz 16-bit? Although it's really a case of downsampling so why all the way down to 44.1 if you could do 88.2? I don't get it.
You haven't disabled 88.2 kHz output surely? |
