I don't know if this has been discussed before, but I just found out that the new PS3 Slims have a number HD settings for Dolby and DTS in the audio options that my original 60GB PS3 doesn't.
Check out this kid's video on Youtube for the screenshots.

What do you make of that? |

That is because slim can bitstream DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD while the fat one can not. Fat one instead decodes everything to PCM. |

ooops, that was about 8 months ago. I totally missed that.
So at this point do you guys think theres any point in keeping the original 60GB Ps3 regarding its audio capabilities? I'm thinking of just getting a standalone SACD/DVD player. I couldn't really use the SACD playback anyway since they removed the DSD>DTS conversion.
Could the Slim be a better system? |

It would seem the Slim might be the better option for BD-Audio or AVCHD if you have a receiver capable of DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD. But to my knowledge the amount of commercial music in either of these formats is very limited. I suppose movies might sound better if you can hear the difference versus PCM.
...so let me get this straight. Sony offers multi-channel SACD decoding on its first few generations of PS3, then removes it and later adds higher defintion multi-channel output? Brilliant. |

In your position, I'd probably go for an Oppo bdp 80 and a slim. Then you get everything, and lower power consumption too. |
