With the holiday season upon us we felt it was a good time to dream up our ideal PlayStation 3 hardware. We've done so in our latest editorial.
In short, it would have the following features:- SACD playback
- 45nm Cell BE and 65 if not 45nm RSX processor
- a capacious Solid State Drive
- a spacious AV component cabinet, preferably ES series design
- DSD output via HDMI, at least as an option
Nice bonuses would be:- PS2 compatibility (preferably with hardware emulation)
- Memory card readers
- 4 USB ports
- 7.1-channel analog audio outputs
- Integrated digital TV tuner(s) with video recording capability
What (other) features would you wish for? |

I would have liked to see what could have been done with Linux if it had unfettered access to the hardware. PS3 Linux development would have had a far larger community than it did if the platform hadn't been so crippled...
A dream, a dream... |

The proposal for network-only storage seemed to conveniently forget the necessity of (frequently large) HDD installs to make the loading times reasonable. I've only encountered a handful of games that don't install any data to the disk. |

Perhaps that's the reason they decided against it?
I also think that'll be a bridge too far for quite a while, probably even for the first PS4s. |
