|

Ok. I have a 5 year old DVPNS3100ES DVD player with HDMI out. I just purchased a STRDA5400ES receiver. Can I decode a DSD signal with these 2 units through HDMI, or is the DVD player outdated. I have had no luck as of yet. |

Well, the DVP-NS3100ES was quite ahead of its time. It was probably the first 'SACD player with HDMI', but not really: HDMI was implemented for DVD but not for SACD.
The user manual says on page 18: Quote: | Note that Super Audio CD sound is not output from the HDMI OUT jack. |
That probably means that during SACD playback only the OSD is output via HDMI.

Yes, but the DSD layer in many sacd's is able to be decoded through the HDMI. This is fact. The new Sony bluerays can do it, but I don't believe the sample rate is high enough from the 3100es. I am still researching it, and, it goes with out saying tech support from sony has been far from effective. |

The 3100 has the circuitry for decoding DSD but not for putting the signal (nor a PCM conversion) on HDMI. In other words, external decoding is not an option becuase the player simply has no way whatsoever to output any SACD audio signal via HDMI. |
