Is there any chance that the PS3 (fat) firmware will ever be upgraded to
utilize "HATS" via HDMI to the later ES receivers? |

I'd say vanishingly small. Given that they've stripped SACD functionality out of all the newer models, I can't believe they'd devote any engineering resources at all to a minor tweak like that which benefits only a very few customers.
Love to be wrong though.
