From time to time I get emails from Reference Recordings. This audiophile label releases SACDs, but also music in a format called HRx. It's simply 24-bit 176.4 kHz PCM stereo on DVD-R. The titles are only offered on DVD-R -- not as downloads.
RR records in 24/176.4 PCM, not DSD, and claims these HRx releases are exact copies of their masters, although some of their SACDs are multichannel while the HRx discs aren't.
Anyway, HRx is a format that PS3 should easily be able to handle (with both analog stereo output and digital output via HDMI) but it doesn't.
I think it would be great if Sony implemented HRx playback in a future firmware upgrade but expect they will not, as HRx basically is a format that competes with SACD and DSD Disc. |
