Liberally borrowing from ideas discussed here in the past weeks, our new editorial proposes seven things Sony could do to make SACD more popular.
After reading, please do let us know what you think. |

I think the fifth point is crucial, and we should say 'make every new BD and SD DVD player SACD-compatible'. What's more, 'add DSD decoding to every A/V receiver'!

I think point 3 has the best chance of happening. It would be relatively easy for Sony to enable DSD bitstreaming on the PS3. SACD unfortunately is a dead format in the U.S. for anything but classical and jazz releases due to licensing costs. Due to the way the music contracts are structured in the U.S. royalty costs have to be paid separately for each layer of a Hybrid SACD. It's the main reason why so many Pop SACD releases are only released in Europe or Japan now(their royalty structure is different for SACD). |

All 7 points are actually good ideas (one of the best, for me, is the 2nd) but there's only one thing needed to make it more popular: strong marketing campaigns and ads. Very strong.
The vast majority of PS3 users (people technologically up-to-date) don't even know about the SACD capabilities of their consoles, and hardly even care. It's the same with Blu-ray. Now it's starting to get popular, thanks to the end of format war, and most important, TV and newspapers ads.
Using high-end technology is always an option, but there are too many people unaware of its existence. Perhaps they need a real chance to get to know about it all. I guess they would like it |

Actually, points 2 and 7 are moot for most PS3 owners. That is because most PS3's are not SACD compatible. So putting PS3 compatible on SACD's would be a violation of the goods descriptions act, and bundling an SACD is no longer an option in the UK as the PS3 is on sale here is not SACD capable. Of course if that is remedied, then it migh tbe worth it. |

Added: a point about how nice it will be to have a PS3 that supports SACD with 65nm RSX as well as Cell because the power consumption will be lower and so will be the fan noise. |

Quote: | 5... release an 'AV component type' BD player with the BD/DVD/SACD/CD drive from PS3 plus whatever other electronics are necessary for SACD playback. The ES series model (BDP-S2000 ES) really ought to have had this. |
I think the decision to call this model 'ES' is just an arbitrary choice by some marketing manager at Sony USA. It doesn't look like a proper ES component at all (its housing is just the regular BD player's with perhaps some slightly different finishing) and there has been no ES model BD player in Europe or Japan, where the ES series has been carried for years.

... and Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio too, please! |
